Stone Handled Shaving Brushes

Steatite is a pretty resilient material. It has no natural lines of grain or layers of weakness, and no natural cleavage.  It takes a very strong clout with a hammer to break it!

However, it has come to my attention that it can sometimes crack under certain conditions. I have now had four reports of this happening, out of about 60 shaving brushes that I have made using the material. If the cold stone is heated suddenly, then a crack can sometimes develop at the upper edge of the handle where it is thinnest adjacent to the hole for the badger hair knot. This is caused by immersing the handle in hot water prior to use, when the stone can expand suddenly due to heat.

With a badger hair knot, there is absolutely no need to soak the brush before using it!  Badger hair does not absorb water. The water needed to create a lather is simply held between the hairs.  (A boar bristle knot does absorb water and benefits from soaking before use). All that is needed is a quick dunk of the badger hairs in warm water, and then shake out the excess water. Do NOT immerse the handle in hot water! Then you will be fine and have a long lasting brush.

What happens if I don't like the brush?

Buying sight-unseen on line from a photo on a web page is not always easy. I appreciate that. I am sure that you will like my brushes once you handle them, but if for any reason you are not satisfied, then assuming that you have not used the brush then first email me at brushmaker@pensoftheforest.co.uk  and I will make a full no-hassle refund, (You pay the postage both ways). Brushes returned must be sent in the same packaging and if posted from outside the EU, the customs slip MUST be marked "Return to maker for full refund" otherwise HM customs will charge me 20% VAT ! Any refund would be made less the customs charges.

In a recent discussion on an internet shaving forum :
"What is your desert island brush"

"For me it would have to be my latest acquisition, which is my Neep Extra Silvertip as it is wonderful to lather up with, and it's the only one quite like it."

"One of my Neeps - the stone extra silvertip, I rather think. "

Each shaving brush  has an individual serial number, and comes with a certificate signed by Rodney Neep.

The more water a brush holds, the more moist and rich a lather will be. This results in less razor skipping and dragging.

The greatest benefit from shaving brush use is the tendency to soften and lift facial hair before a shave. Applying shaving cream by hand mats hair or raises it unevenly. Aerosol foams don't soften and lift facial hair as much as real shaving soap foam applied with a brush, instead the aerosol foam is relatively dry with lots of large air bubbles. Real shaving soap produces a creamy lather.

Shaving brush use requires agitation of the soap or cream (usually in a cup or the wooden shaving soap holder) to form a lather suitable for a shave. Apply the lather to the face in a gentle circular motion, and leave for about a minute before shaving for the best results. With a good foamy cream produced by a good brush a razor does not need to be pressed to the skin in order to provide a close shave. You can use zero pressure, resulting in a much more comfortable shaving experience.

The stone is mined (actually it is just a hole in the ground) by hand in a small village in Western Kenya.

Traditionally, it is the men of the village who do the carving of soapstone. They make a range of ornaments and gifts for sale to tourists in the market in the city of Kisumu.

It has been a pleasure to visit and make friends with these people. They are very poor people, and my regular order for soapstone blocks provides enough money to feed several families for a month!

Customer comments:

Fabulous. I love my Rodney Neep brush
and can't wait for my second - this guy certainly knows what he's doing. I've never before seen a knot this dense.

Some stone currently in stock

Only three pieces of this grey stone. (It has streaks on two sides and spots on the opposite sides). NOW ALL GONE!

I import this wonderful stone direct from Kenya. Each piece is turned on the lathe using traditional hand tools. The result is a collection of absolutely stunning shaving brushes. No two are quite the same shape, and of course, there is natural variation in the soapstone.

  • Please note that at this time I have no more of the very dark red/dark purple stone, and none of the grey mottled stone.

This is the same type of stone that I use for my highest quality fountain pens.

Note: The Kenya Steatite that I use is NOT soft stone. It will not scratch easily in normal use, and is particularly hard due to the mineral impurities in the stone.

#1798 - Steatite Stone - Large Dreadnought

30mm Super Silvertip Badger

This is a large heavy brush! An incredible natural grain pattern with bands of creams and reds, and a large inclusion of Hematitie metal on one side. The stone around the hematitie has been naturally stained red from the metal.

I started to turn this brush handle on the lathe many months ago, but the stone was so hard that I gave up and just placed it on the shelf. Then I revisited it with carbide tipped tools and managed to turn it successfully. Just. That's why it ended up being such a large handle. But it worked! And now it is a superb shaving brush that will certainly be treasured.

  • Diameter: 40mm
  • Diameter at base: 42mm

#1154 - Square Sided Barrel
28mm Extra Silvertip Badger

A square sided barrel with rounded corners. With 1/8" half round beading cut into the corners. The base and top is perfectly circular.

Made entirely by hand on the lathe, and with the flat sides filed and sanded by hand totally by eye. (Not with a milling machine). Quite a challenge! I am particularly proud with the precision of the result, but I won't be in a hurry to make another one like this!

  • handle height: 57mm
  • diameter of barrel: 40mm
  • size over the flat sides: 36mm
  • diameter at base: 34mm
  • knot: 28mm Extra Silvertip Badger - the ultimate high density knot
    Knot loft: 55mm
VERY SOFT TIPS, BUT PLENTY OF BACKBONE FOR FACE LATHERING

SOLD

Brushes below have now been sold but I can make similar ones on request. Note that I do not have any more supply of the dark red stone.

A selection of steatite blocks cut and ready to be made into shaving brush handles. See the one second from the right in the top row. That will have some grains of real gold in it in that dark patch!
